Council Tax Changes for Second Homes!

Council Tax is set to change from the 1^{st of} April 2025 for furnished properties that are no one’s sole or main residence!

BCP Council & New Forst District Council will introduce a 100% council tax premium, with the standard 100% charge and the 100% premium charge, this makes the total council tax charge 200% for second homes.

Some properties are exempt and will still receive a discount:

Have a second property that is left unfurnished & not used
Properties that meet holiday let rules (e.g. Annex)
Properties that are a requirement for employment
Properties that are seasonal homes

The exemption also applies for up to 12 months on properties that are being marketed for sale/for rent or probate has been granted. (terms and conditions apply).

Both councils have implemented this new charge to encourage owners of second homes to make that their main residence and to help increase housing supply to the local areas.
