Oakdale is a residential suburb of Poole in Dorset. This area is growing in popularity due to reasons such as the locality of good schools and a bustling Poole town centre. There are a number of retail businesses such as a petrol garage and convenience stores along the main Wimborne Road but no main “high Street”.

Location & Geography

Oakdale grew up along the main A35 Wimborne Road, which goes through Poole & out towards Dorchester & west Dorset. It shares boundaries with Creekmoor, Poole Town, Parkstone, Canford Heath West and Canford Heath East, with a retail park & industrial area running along the western boundary of Holes Bay.

Historical Facts

The original C of E St Georges Church was built in 1932, this is now the Oakdale Library, prior to this the people of Oakdale had to worship in an old army hut.

Within 20 years, the rapidly expanding population of Oakdale meant that larger churches were required for both Church of England & Catholic congregation. Two new churches were built in Oakdale. The foundation stone for a new church in Darbys Lane was laid in 1959 and the original Catholic Church relocated & from West Quay Road to its current location in Wimborne Road in 1972.

Entertainment

Sports fans will be well aware that the Poole town is famous for its speedway team, the Pirates whose home ground is close to Oakdale. If football is your thing, you will find the home ground of Poole Town F.C. at Tatnam Farm, located in Oakdale.

Eating & Drinking

There are a number of local pubs & a great Fish n Chip shop in Oakdale. If you have transport, approximately 1.7 miles away, you will find Tower Park leisure complex which is home to an enormous Tesco but also a cinema, bowling alley, Splashdown water slide park and chain restaurants such as Nandos, Pizza Express, Frankie & Bennies, TGI Fridays……. Well worth a visit!
