Location & Geography

Located directly on the coast between the towns of Poole and Bournemouth and more specifically, nestled between Branksome Chine and Sandbanks, Canford Cliffs is built around a small hill. The long and peaceful beach is backed by a steep sandy cliff face, with a maximum elevation of 30 metres above sea level, which makes it a popular destination for sun seekers during the summer months. The area is surrounded by woodland.

Historical Facts

  • The “Cliffs of Canford” were originally part of Lord Wimborne’s Canford Estate. In 1890 plans were made to build houses in Haven Road to form the central feature of a village with plots developed on either side. By the early 1930s, many houses had been built and a village hall had been constructed.
  • In 1920 a wealthy entrepreneur, Mr Thomas Simpson, founded Compton Acres, which is 10 acres of ornamental gardens - it still going strong today and acknowledged as one of the finest privately owned gardens in England. With its plant centre, restaurant & tea rooms it is a popular draw for both locals & tourist alike http://www.comptonacres.co.uk/

Entertainment

Canford Cliffs is perfectly located for water sports enthusiasts or families wanting an idyllic retreat.  Poole Harbour has water so shallow that you can safely walk out into it for around 200 yards, which makes it a popular destination for windsurfers and kite surfers but also means that the smallest of children can enjoy the freedom of playing safely in the water.
The ice cream kiosk, café & Tesco Express, located directly on the beach, provide all the refreshments you could possibly need for a day on the beach
Compton Acres is a great day out, not just a garden but also has a deer sanctuary, craft shop and brasserie.
