Location & Geography

A suburb, 4 miles north of Poole and 4 miles south of Wimborne, Broadstone forms part of the original heathland that covers the Poole basin.

A bit of history

  • In 1840, Broadstone was farm with a stream and a railway line running through it.
  • In 1853 a church was built and in 1872 the railway station was built, originally named New Poole Junction, connecting it to nearby Hamworthy station
  • Legend has it that a number of “broad stones” were laid across the local stream to enable people to cross it without getting their feet wet. The stream flowed in the valley between Clarendon Road and Springdale Road.


With a population of just over 10,000, Broadstone is the centre for many clubs and societies including football, golf (Broadstone Golf Club has a high ranking status, named as one on the best countrywide), cricket and tennis clubs, an active Royal British Legion club, a sports centre and even Poole runners.

Woodland walks along the old railway track, now called the cycle track, are ideal for a stroll with the family or great for dog walking. There is a network of cycle tracks in Broadstone, these run from Wimborne to Hamworthy, Upton Country Park, Merley and Holes Bay leading in to Poole.

Drinking and shopping worth a mention

The high street has a balanced selection of shops, ranging from local butchers and greengrocers, women’s clothing, boutique jewellery and gift shops, you can normally find what you need. With Costa coffee and now M&S opening, Broadstone is definitely a thriving community.

Broadstone has developed its offering of places to eat and drink and now offers the full experience with A la Carte, Pizza, Thai and Indian restaurants; a great selection for friends or family meals out.
